Ingredients
For the Sopapillas Puff
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
3/4 cup warm milk
Vegetable oil for frying
For the Toppings
Honey for drizzling
Cinnamon sugar (optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Make the Dough
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add in the softened butter and mix it into the dry ingredients until it resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add the warm milk and stir until a dough forms. Knead the dough for a few minutes until it becomes smooth.
Step 2: Roll Out the Dough
On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out to about 1/4-inch thickness. Use a sharp knife or a pizza cutter to cut the dough into squares or rectangles.
Step 3: Heat the Oil
In a large skillet or deep fryer, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Test the oil by dropping in a small piece of dough—it should bubble and float to the top right away.
Step 4: Fry the Sopapillas
Carefully drop a few pieces of dough into the hot oil at a time. Fry for 2-3 minutes, or until golden and puffy, flipping halfway through. Use tongs or a slotted spoon to remove the sopapillas from the oil and drain them on a paper towel-lined plate.
Step 5: Serve and Enjoy
Drizzle with honey and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar if desired. Serve warm and enjoy these fluffy, crispy bites of heaven!
Notes
Chocolate Lovers: Drizzle melted chocolate over the sopapillas for a rich, sweet flavor.
Fruit-filled: Add a spoonful of fruit jam or preserves inside the dough before frying for a fruity surprise
