Description
Take everything you love about a classic Philly cheesesteak—sizzling shaved beef, sautéed onions and peppers, melty provolone or American cheese—and wrap it up in a crispy, golden egg roll wrapper. Yep, it’s the ultimate hybrid food. A little East Coast, a little Asian-fusion, and a whole lot of delicious. These bad boys are deep-fried to crunchy perfection on the outside and totally gooey and savory on the inside. They’re perfect for game day, party trays, or just when you need an excuse to combine your takeout cravings in one mouthwatering bite.
Ingredients
1 tablespoon oil (canola or olive oil)
1 small onion, diced
1 small green bell pepper, diced
1 lb thinly sliced ribeye or sirloin steak (or use deli roast beef in a pinch)
½ teaspoon garlic powder
Salt and black pepper, to taste
6 slices provolone or American cheese, chopped
12 egg roll wrappers
Oil for frying (vegetable or peanut oil works great)
Instructions
Step 1: Cook the filling
Heat the tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Sauté the onions and peppers until soft and lightly golden, about 5–6 minutes. Add the shaved steak, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Cook until the beef is browned and fully cooked, breaking it apart with a spatula. Remove from heat, stir in the chopped cheese, and let it melt slightly into the mixture.
Step 2: Fill ’em up
Lay an egg roll wrapper on a clean surface with a corner pointing toward you (diamond shape). Scoop about 2–3 tablespoons of the filling into the center. Fold the bottom corner up over the filling, tuck in the sides, and roll tightly. Seal the final edge with a dab of water. Repeat with the rest of the wrappers.
Step 3: Fry to perfection
Heat about 2 inches of oil in a deep pan to 350°F. Fry the egg rolls in batches, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy—about 3–4 minutes per batch. Drain on paper towels and let them cool just slightly before diving in.
Notes
Mushroom Style: Add sautéed mushrooms for a Philly-mushroom moment.
Spicy Kick: Add some chopped jalapeños or a sprinkle of red pepper flakes to the filling.
Cheese Swap: Use mozzarella, white cheddar, or even a little Cheez Whiz if you want to go full classic.
Air Fryer Method: Spray with oil and air fry at 375°F for 10–12 minutes, flipping halfway through.
