Ingredients
- 2 cups stone-ground grits (not instant)
- 6 cups chicken broth (or water for a lighter version)
- 1 cup heavy cream (or whole milk)
- ½ cup unsalted butter, cubed
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- ½ cup crumbled cooked bacon (for topping)
- ¼ cup chopped green onions (for topping)
- ½ teaspoon hot sauce (optional, for a kick)
Instructions
Grease the inside of your slow cooker with butter or cooking spray to prevent sticking.
Add grits, chicken broth, heavy cream, butter, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and smoked paprika to the slow cooker. Stir to combine.
Cover and cook on LOW for 4-6 hours, stirring occasionally to prevent clumping.
Once the grits are soft and creamy, stir in cheddar cheese, Parmesan, and hot sauce (if using). Mix until fully melted and combined.
Top with crispy bacon, green onions, and extra cheese. Serve warm with grilled shrimp, sausage, or eggs for a hearty meal.
Notes
- Make it extra creamy by adding an extra ½ cup of heavy cream before serving.
- Want a smoky flavor? Stir in a few dashes of liquid smoke.
- For a spicy twist, add diced jalapeños or cayenne pepper.
