Description

Okay, so imagine if a cheeseburger and a loaded plate of fries had a baby, and that baby grew up to be the most ridiculously satisfying casserole you’ve ever seen. That’s exactly what we’re dealing with here. We’re talking about seasoned ground beef that tastes like the perfect burger patty, crispy golden french fries, and enough melted cheese to make you question why you ever bothered with actual burgers when you could just shovel this masterpiece into your face with a fork.

This is comfort food at its most unapologetic. It’s the kind of dish that makes kids cheer and adults secretly take seconds when they think no one’s looking. It’s basically everything you love about a classic cheeseburger and fries, but in casserole form so you can eat it with a spoon if you want to. No judgment here — we’re all friends in the land of melted cheese and crispy potatoes.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Burger Base:

  • 1.5 lbs ground beef (80/20 is perfect)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Fry Layer:

  • 2 lbs frozen french fries (crinkle cut or steak fries work best)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp seasoned salt
  • 1/2 tsp paprika

For the Cheese Situation:

  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded American cheese (don’t judge, it melts like a dream)
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella

For the Creamy Layer:

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cheddar cheese soup
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup milk

For the Toppings (because toppings make everything better):

  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 2 tomatoes, diced
  • 1/2 cup diced pickles
  • 1/2 cup diced red onion
  • Extra cheese for serving
  • Ketchup and mustard for drizzling

Instructions

Step 1: Prep Your Battlefield Preheat your oven to 425°F. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray. Get your game face on — we’re about to build something beautiful.

Step 2: Cook Those Fries Toss the frozen fries with olive oil, seasoned salt, and paprika. Spread them on a large baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes until they’re golden and crispy. Don’t skip this step — soggy fries are the enemy of happiness.

Step 3: Build the Burger Base While the fries are cooking, heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up as it browns (about 6-8 minutes). Add the diced onion and cook until softened, about 3 minutes. Stir in garlic and cook for another minute.

Add ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Stir everything together and let it simmer for 2-3 minutes until the flavors get all happy together.

Step 4: Make the Cheese Sauce In a bowl, whisk together the condensed cheese soup, sour cream, mayonnaise, and milk until smooth. This is going to be the creamy, dreamy layer that binds everything together.

Step 5: Layer Like a Champion Reduce oven temperature to 375°F. Spread the cooked beef mixture in the bottom of your prepared baking dish. Pour the cheese sauce over the beef and spread it evenly.

Layer half of the cooked fries over the sauce. Sprinkle with half of the cheddar and American cheese. Add the remaining fries, then top with the rest of the cheese plus the mozzarella.

Step 6: Bake It ‘Til You Make It Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake another 10-15 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden on top.

Step 7: Top and Serve Let it rest for 5 minutes (I know, torture), then top with fresh lettuce, diced tomatoes, pickles, and red onion. Drizzle with ketchup and mustard if you’re feeling fancy.

Notes

  • Serve with a simple side salad to balance out all that delicious indulgence

  • Pickle spears on the side because pickles make everything better
